Heart Attack vs. Cardiac Arrest: What’s the Difference?

HEART ATTACK

A heart attack occurs when one of the arteries that supply blood to the heart becomes blocked. Without enough blood flow, part of the heart muscle is damaged and begins to die.

Risk Factors

  • Dyslipidemia / Atherosclerosis (the #1 cause)
  • Obesity / Overweight
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Smoking
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Chronic stress

In Mexico, more than 177,000 people die every year from a heart attack, making it the leading cause of death in adults.

How Does a Heart Attack Look Compared to Cardiac Arrest?

Heart Attack

What is happening in the heart?

A coronary artery becomes blocked, and part of the heart stops receiving blood.

A portion of the heart muscle begins to die, but the heart is still beating.

How does the person look?

  • Chest pain or pressure that may radiate to the arm, neck, or jaw
  • Cold sweat
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Extreme fatigue

Cardiac Arrest

What is happening in the heart?

The heart suddenly stops beating.

How does the person look?

  • Unconscious (collapses and does not respond)
  • Not breathing
  • No pulse

What Should I Do?

If you suspect a heart attack:

  • Call emergency services immediately
  • Keep the person calm and seated
  • Take them to a hospital as soon as possible

If you witness a cardiac arrest:

  • Call emergency services
  • Start CPR immediately
  • Use an automated external defibrillator (AED) if available

Both are medical emergencies. If you see these signs, seek immediate medical help.

Diagnosing a Heart Attack

When someone arrives at the hospital with symptoms of a heart attack, doctors need to act quickly. The goal is to confirm whether the heart muscle is being damaged and to start treatment as soon as possible.

Not everyone needs the same tests and your cardiologist will evaluate your situation and decide which studies are best for you.

Common Tests Used to Diagnose a Heart Attack

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG)
  • Blood tests (troponins)
  • Coronary angiography
  • Echocardiogram

Cardiac Rehabilitation After a Heart Attack

Cardiac rehabilitation is essential for recovery and for preventing future cardiac events. It improves quality of life and reduces mortality in people who have had a heart attack.

What Does a Rehabilitation Program Include?

A team of specialists provides a personalized program that may include:

  • Supervised exercise programs: Improve physical capacity and strengthen the heart.
  • Education on healthy habits: Guidance on diet, smoking cessation, and risk‑factor control.
  • Psychological support: Helps manage stress, anxiety, or depression after a heart attack.
  • Regular medical monitoring: Tracks cardiovascular health and adjusts treatment as needed.

Protecting Your Heart Starts Today

Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death, but many heart attacks can be avoided with timely action and healthy habits. Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, diabetes, stress, and lifestyle choices such as smoking, diet, and physical activity plays a major role in keeping the heart strong.

For people who have already experienced a heart attack, ongoing care becomes essential. Following medical treatment, attending cardiac rehabilitation, adopting healthier routines, and staying alert to new symptoms all help reduce the chances of another event. With the right support, most individuals can return to an active and fulfilling life.

Across every stage of heart health, one message stands out: you don’t have to do this alone. The most effective care comes from an interdisciplinary team wich includes: cardiologists, endocrinologists, nutritionists, psychologists, exercise specialists, and educators working together to support both your physical and emotional well‑being. Their combined expertise helps you understand your risks, make informed decisions, and build habits that protect your heart for years to come.

Taking action today is one of the most meaningful investments you can make in your health. Your heart deserves that commitment, and at Salvando Latidos, we are here to support you whenever you need us.
